Join our School Forests Programme

For plants and animals to thrive, they need to be part of a connected network, that means habitat and food every 100-300m or so. Hong Kong is home to more than 1000 schools scattered across the city, some of them closer to country parks and native vegetation than others. Each of them may not have much space, but many can grow a tiny forest and together, that could mean up to 100,000m2 of forest or more across the city.

What if every school in the city had its own tiny forest?

Big props to

ICHK Hong Lok Yuen
for setting up the first
Miyawaki forest in Hong Kong

and winning the 2023 International School Awards for Sustainability!

How it works

1) Pick a spot

It needs to be an areas on the ground that is 100m2 in size, roughly the size of 6 parking spaces. This can be 4m x 25m, 5 x 20m, 10x10m, square, round, whatever is feasible for you.

3) Plant

We organize a planting week! This would be 3-4 days preparing the area, usually with an excavator, followed by another 1-2 days planting with your students!

2) Species selection

We will help you test the soil, pick the right native species and figure out a maintenance plan.

4) Maintain

Once planted, we need to water and keep weeds out of our tiny forest, so that it grows nice and strong. After 2 years, the forest is completely self-sufficient, no more water or maintenance needed!

Outdoor education workshops

We supplement our forest sites with workshops that engage students beyond the forest planting stage. Depending on the school’s interests, students can be part of monitoring and maintaining the site and gain a deeper knowledge of the local species growing under their care.
